Renate Nikolay, Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Vera Jourova, Values and Transparency, European CommissionRenate Nikolay is now Head of Cabinet of Vĕra Jourová, Vice-President for Values and Transparency working on matters such as rule of law or disinformation. In October 2019 she became Director in charge of Asia and Latin America in DG Trade. From 2014 to 2019, she was Head of Cabinet of Vĕra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality where she played a key role in the adoption of the data protection reform and the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor and the Code of Conduct with platforms on online hate speech. Between 2011 and 2014 she led the Unit of interinstitutional and international relations in DG Justice dealing with legislative files and international negotiations such as the ones on data protection with the US. Prior to that she was advisor in the Cabinet of the first High Representative / Vice President Cathy Ashton where she led on the relations with the European Parliament in setting up the European External Action Service and on relations with Asia, in particular China. From 2004-2009 she was member of the Cabinet of the Trade Commissioners Peter Mandelson and Baroness Cathy Ashton where she was part of the negotiating team in the trade talks in the multilateral trade round of the World Trade Organisation (the Doha Round) and the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement which was finalised in 2009. She started her career in the European Commission in the Directorate General for Trade in November 2003 dealing with the accession negotiations of Vietnam to the World Trade Organisation and the Trade Policy Committee with the Member States. Prior to that she was a diplomat in the German Permanent Representation in Brussels and worked as private Secretary to the German G8 Sherpa in the German Ministry of Economics. She holds a law degree (Erstes und Zweites Staatsexamen) from the Free University in Berlin and a master as a Fulbright Scholar in Washington DC. She was also an Erasmus Scholar in France/Grenoble.
Carl Dolan, Deputy Director & Head of Advocacy, Open Society European Policy InstituteCarl Dolan is the Deputy Director and Head of Advocacy at the Open Society European Policy institute in Brussels. Between 2013 and 2019, he was Director of Transparency International’s EU Office, leading their advocacy and research. Previously, Carl worked for the UK Research Councils, the European Commission and the European Foundation Centre. He holds degrees in economics and philosophy from University College Dublin (1991-97) and studied and taught political philosophy at the University of Bristol (1999-2002).
Claire Fourcans, Policy & Campaigns Director, European Women's LobbyClaire is Policy and Campaigns Director in the EWL Secretariat. She is responsible for coordinating and providing strategic direction to EWL’s policy and campaigns work. She works to ensure that EWL’s policies are sound, its advocacy sharp and its campaigns loud so that, together with its members all over Europe, EWL brings progress to women’s rights.
She joined the EWL in September 2019. Claire is a lawyer, a campaigner and an activist for women’s rights. She studied law in France and Germany and specialised in International Human Rights Law. She is a long-standing feminist, fighting for women’s rights including through the Women’s Committee at Amnesty International France from 2002 to 2008.
Claire focused her PhD on sexual violence in armed conflicts and gained both academic and practical expertise on gender legal studies. After defending her PhD in November 2007, she joined the International Criminal Court in The Hague to work on Congolese, Central African and Ivorian cases, specializing in the participation of survivors of sexual violence in the legal proceedings. Claire then moved to Brussels and joined the ONE Campaign from late 2013 to mid-2019 leading a team of campaigners to ensure EU’s leadership in the fight against extreme poverty in the global south, with a focus on women’s and girls’ rights.
Mark Alexander Friedrich, Head of International Affairs, METRO AGMark Alexander Friedrich is Head of International Affairs and represents the interests of METRO AG and the sales divisions accross Europe and Asia as well as with regard to global issues.
He has been with METRO since 2017 and previously worked for political foundation Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Germany and abroad.

Joe Lynam, Presenter, BBCJoe Lynam is a respected broadcaster and moderator who was the BBC’s senior Business Correspondent for a decade. He now presents the current affairs show ‘The Newsroom’ on the BBC World Service.
Joe has won many awards for his original journalism including the 2018 Headline Money Award for his BBC One exposé of how RBS (GRG) treated many of its own business customers. Joe was also the first to broadcast on Radio 4 a phone fraud (Vishing) in almost real time as an elderly lady unwittingly handed over her life savings to fraudsters. For that, he won the Wincott prize for Journalism in 2016.
Joe has travelled the world with the BBC covering the financial crisis (2007-2010), followed by the Eurozone crisis (2010-2013) and more recently the economic and political fallout from the Brexit referendum.
He has presented on the Today programme, Newsnight, BBC One Breakfast as well as Five Live and the BBC News Channel.
Joe took a mini career break to tackle the scourge of Disinformation. He learned the methods used by local and foreign ‘bad actors’ in spreading deliberately false information – known to some as ‘fake news’. He co-authored the Action Plan against Disinformation.
The European Movement International, Forum Europe and METRO AG are organising an event to discuss the European Commission’s Rule of Law report and the role stakeholders from across society can play in defence of democracy and European values.
Earlier in the autumn, the European Commission published the first EU-wide report on the rule of law, which covers both positive and negative developments across the EU. It shows that many Member States have high rule of law standards, but important challenges to the rule of law exist in the EU. It also reflects relevant developments stemming from the emergency measures taken by Member States due to the coronavirus crisis.
The event will bring together EU officials, experts, civil society and business representatives to discuss the European Commission report and how to strengthen the rule of law across the EU.
